Proposed Letter announcing the 1967 Compromise Agreement between ONE Inc. and Tangents

This letter was never distributed, due to Dorr Legg’s lambast of Slater and the Tangent Group as published in the May, 1967 Friends of ONE. The directors of HIC considered the letter a violation of the spirit and text of the compromise and therefore they were no longer bound by it.

May 8, 1967

Dear friend:

You are undoubtedly aware that a serious rift developed at ONE, Incorporated, in April, 1965. During the two years since that time, the dispute which brought about that rift was placed in litigation and was pending in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County.

Two separate groups had in the interlude continued to work separately for public acceptance of homosexuality but, because of the lawsuit, under greatly restricted circumstances.

Upon careful reflection, therefore, it has been agreed that the expense, delay and the bitterness always attendant upon litigation have been sufficiently disadvantageous to both sides and to the Homophile Movement as a whole, as to make a compromise desirable. Whatever our other disagreements, we continue to have many objectives in common and are now unanimously in accord with the idea that the Movement which means so much to us and to you, should not be made to suffer because of any continuing dispute between ourselves.

Accordingly, an agreement has now been reached which it is hoped will leave us free to concentrate all our efforts on the worthwhile and productive activities which have always been our principal concern.

Under the terms of this agreement the offices of ONE, Incorporated at 2256 Venice Boulevard, Los Angeles, California will continue as the present address of that organization which has exclusive right to act under the name, ONE, Incorporated and to publish ONE Magazine. The organization now situated at 3473 1/2 Cahuenga Boulevard, Los Angeles, California will henceforth conduct its affairs, including the publication of Tangents Magazine, under the organization name, Tangents. Also under the terms of the agreement, a division of the properties is currently being effected.

Both organizations, having now taken this large step, urge you to lend your support to whichever of them has aims, methods and principles most closely coinciding with your own.

Sincerely,

Lewis Bonham, President
ONE, INCORPORATED

Don Slater, Editor
TANGENTS
