Billy Glover’s Reaction upon reading John O’Brien’s 1997 Report to ONE Institute

Dated Friday, August 2, 2002

This e-mail was sent from HIC's Vice President Billy Glover to HIC's officers upon his first reading John O'Brien's April 1997 Report to ONE Institute regarding his "rescue" of HIC's archives after the death of HIC President Don Slater in 1997. It has been edited for clarity.

I feel this issue is important as a generic issue that other LGBT groups, and in fact all organizations, should learn from. We settled the issue in 1965 when we simply separated from Dorr, never saying anything against him except that he was trying to force his sole opinion and ideas on all of us, and Don Slater had a legal and moral right to say that's it, you can do what you want, but we will (we being the majority of legally elected members and the editors of the magazine) move on. And that is how the judge viewed it and how the 2 attorneys settled it—we got the material and Dorr got the name, and he was happy and never tried to get any more material, and that was in 1967 and we incorporated as HIC in 1968. Can't they talk to Hillel Chodos and see the legal documents??? And before I forget it, John O'Brien and others had said that Dorr had a key to our office. That is and was irrelevant, as our main material was NOT in the office, I hope you all remember that it was safe in Rodney Hee's house, near downtown Hollywood, and I doubt anyone ever followed us or discovered that.

The worst part of John O'Brien's "report" is his attempt at psychoanalyzing Don Slater, and he is ignorant and has hidden facts that would prove him wrong, and is wrong even if his facts were right. Don suffered when Dorr died, he didn't suffer from fear of Dorr.

And so the present members of ONE Institute are ignorant and have foolishly relied on his lies and self-serving agenda and thus are going to look foolish when the facts are shown.

John said the material I have down here is in lousy shape and some is, but not the valuable parts. The same was true of Don & Tony's house. The books were upstairs in a bedroom, safe. The files were safe in the basement, which Anthonyhad floored and used for dancing. They even had a bathroom down there, and Don's old desk, and he worked down there frequentlyl. The house was in good order; the material was not"hidden" it was just moved around as Don used it. (I myself had the gall to fuss at him when I couldn't find something.)

This report is a fraud. We never gave our material to them, though we did give it to CSUN. Jim and Todd have clearly stated the fact that all terms of the agreement to place the material at 909 were broken, no separate space, and in fact Jim [Schneider] had to get the building ready years later. They should be naming the building after Jim.

There is obviously a fiction writer hidden in John O'Brien. I was there when Don's home was cleared of HIC material. Anthonygave him material, he helped Jim, but obviously he now admits he stole our material, and he has no knowledge, and no facts to support his claim that the material really belonged to ONE, and his statement that, in one place, that the material was in terrible shape, is contradicted in his own words later, when he says they were in good shape. John tried to justify his importance but to say his health was put in jeopardy by working in the house, when Don and all of us did for years, is so absurd, that the ONE people should see clearly how they have been deceived.

More later.
